Description

What is HbA1c?

HbA1c, also known as glycosylated hemoglobin, is produced when glucose in your body adheres to your red blood cells. Red blood cells are active in your body for about 2 to 3 months, so this is an important indicator of average blood sugar during this period.

Why we measure HbA1c?

High values of HbA1c may be a sign of diabetes mellitus and are therefore often used to detect diabetes mellitus or pre-diabetes in adults(high blood sugar, risk of diabetes); For diabetics, HbA1c can help showing the effect of blood sugar control.

Normal value of HbA1c

The normal range of HbA1c is between 4 and 6.5%, and the current clinical studies of diabetes have confirmed that when the HbA1c is less than 7%, it can effectively prevent the occurrence of chronic complications of diabetes; When it is more than 8%, it may be poor blood sugar control.

**Since HbA1c is also affected by blood glucose, heme, red blood cells and other factors, for gestational diabetes patients, children, anemia and other blood diseases, kidney failure, liver disease patients, etc., the results maybe affected, so it may be necessary for a doctor to perform other tests to help diagnose the condition
